Arbor Wood

Thermally Modified Wood

Arbor Wood Co. produces thermally modified wood for a variety of outdoor and indoor applications including siding, decking, and architectural millwork. Their process starts by using domestically and responsibly sourced wood which is thermally modified using only heat and steam. The result is a high-quality, performance-driven material, which sustains the natural beauty and design element of wood all without the use of harsh chemicals.

Thermal modification is a unique craft which alters wood at the cellular level to create a material that is functionally and visually successful in a range of residential and commercial applications. High heat and steam replace chemicals to fundamentally modify Arbor Wood’s hemicellulose, making it one of the most natural, chemical-free ways to extend the service life of a wood product. The wood is less absorbent, resulting in increased material stability with less warping/cupping and minimal expansion/contraction. Additionally, certain organic compounds are eliminated during modification thus removing the food source for rot and insects. The conversion of sugars to a nonfood source also turns the timber a darker, richer through-color, providing an appealing and refined aesthetic.

The thermal modification process affects wood’s relationship with water by breaking down the hydroxyl groups in the wood and eliminating the bound water, making Arbor Wood less prone to mold, rot, and fungal decay. The wood is also less likely to absorb new moisture and has a reduced equilibrium moisture content, reducing the chance of swelling and shrinking by up to 60%. The lower moisture content reduces the overall weight of the wood and helps support the general workability of Arbor Wood.

Siding

Arbor Wood Co. thermally modified wood siding uses domestically sourced and sustainably harvested timber. Thermal modification allows for wood not naturally suitable for exterior applications to be successful because of its compositional change on a cellular level. A performance-driven and attractive material, Arbor Wood is a sustainable option for your next project. Learn more here.

* Indicates WUI Approved Option

Decking

Arbor Wood is an eco-conscious alternative to composite, chemical-treated or exotic hardwood decking. Because thermally modified wood is less prone to water absorption, expansion/contraction, rot and decay, woods not typically suitable for outdoor applications are able to perform with a long service life. Learn more here.

Dimensional Lumber

Arborwood produces a range of dimensional lumber profiles in all of their thermally modified wood species and finishes. Perfect for architectural millwork, trim or most places where the stability and beauty of Arbor Wood can enhance your project. Learn more here.

GRAD® Hidden Clip-On System

The GRAD® Hidden Clip-On System is a simple, fast, and secure method for installing Arbor Wood Co. siding and decking. The patented rail design creates a natural air gap, eliminating the need for furring strips, while the pre-mounted clips create uniform spacing of boards. The system works great for both vertical and horizontal installations and doesn’t require any pre-drilling or fasteners through the wood. Just simply install the rails then click the boards into place.

CUT INSTALLATION TIME IN HALF

- Decreases installation time by 50%
- Pre-mounted clips provide consistent spacing
- Built in air-gap eliminates the need for furring strips
- Completely hidden fastening with no pre-drilling required
- Installs both vertically or horizontally
- Made with 100% recyclable materials

SaferWood Thermex-FR

Arbor Wood is now available with SaferWood Thermex-FR by Chemco, Inc. Since 1981, this industry leading exterior fire retardant treatment renders wood “ignition resistant” having passed extended surface burning tests and weathering as required by ASTM and model building codes including:

- International Building Code [IBC]
- International Residential Code [IRC]
- International Wildland Urban Interface Code [IWUIC]

Arbor Wood with SaferWood Thermex-FR is compliant with Chapter 7A WUI of the California Building Code [CBC] and California Residential Code [CRC], and is CALFIRE SFM Listed.

Accessories

Arbor Wood Co. offers a wide range of recommended products and accessories that are compatible with siding, decking, and millwork products. From finishing oil, hidden decking fasteners, screws, furring strips and end sealer, we are able to provide everything you need to complete your project right. Contact us for more information.

Color Change

Thermal modification changes the naturally occurring sugars in the wood resulting in beautiful, rich tones which extend through the full thickness of the material. Since Arbor Wood is still a natural product, the grain and unique characteristics of the wood remain. In an exterior environment, Arbor Wood will move to gray when unfinished and the application of a UV inhibitor helps maintain the original color.
